For years, Jon Jones has been talking about fighting at heavyweight. Despite his dominant reign as UFC light heavyweight champion, Jones has always had one eye fixed on the big boys.
However, Jones' focus shifted to Francis Ngannou in May of that same year, with Jones taking to Twitter to challenge Ngannou, writing, "All that power means nothing when your haymakers are too slow."
Despite Jones' interest in these heavyweight matchups, neither of them came to fruition. In fact, Jones didn't fight for nearly three years. But on Saturday night, the UFC announced that Jones will face Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 on March 4 in Las Vegas. The bout will be a title fight, as the UFC announced it had stripped the champ, Ngannou, of his belt and released him from the roster.
This turn of events is just the latest in a career filled with highs and lows for Jones. It is clear that Jones' desire to fight at heavyweight is still present, but it remains to be seen if he will ever get the chance to do so.
What do you think is the reason for Jones' long absence from the octagon?
